Pickens High
School's FIRST Robotics Competition Team (Team PHS), also known as the
Dominators, was founded to excite high school students
about math, science, and technology.
NASA, Amicalola
EMC Trust, Lexington Insulators, and ETC have provided substantial
funding so Team PHS can participate in FIRST (For Inspiration and
Recognition of Science and Technology) and attend the Peachtree
Regional Competition. In addition, Appalachian Technical College,
Southern Polytechnical State University, and Wheeler High School, 2003
Regional Rookie All-Star Team, provide technical support.
Team PHS
includes 30 students broken into engineering, operations, and
management sub-teams. In the fall, 18 students attended
FIRST Robotics training sessions hosted by the Georgia Tech
Robo-Jackets. At the January 10 kickoff, Team
PHS gets a FIRST robot kit and has 6 weeks to build
a robot that it will compete at the Peachtree Regional
in mid-March and, if successful, at the Championships in the Georgia
Dome in mid-April.
